Strawberry Way
Strawberry Way is used by more pedestrians than any other Downtown alleyway. Since 2003 the PDP has been working with stakeholders, funders, and design professionals to make it more attractive, appealing, and vibrant.
Features of PDP's Strawberry Way Enhancement Project include three illuminated Strawberry Way signs, illuminated, color-changing panels, a band of red LED lighting on the side of the Smithfield/Liberty Garage, and two public art installations. Both installations use the theme of light in innovative ways. California-based artist Laurel Beckman has created four round light boxes, each with an eye image. Beckman hopes her work will “both mirror and speak to pedestrians” who pass through Strawberry Way.
The Pittsburgh team of architect Gerard Damiani and artist Jeremy Boyle created "V24/7/365", a unique work that occupies space above the alley, between two buildings to which it is attached. "V24/7/365" uses solar energy to power an audio amplifier and computer, which continuously transmits a musical composition loosely based on Vivaldi's The Four Seasons.
Funding for this initiative came from the PDP Bid funds, The Heinz Endowments, The Urban Redevelopment Authority, The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, and an anonymous source.
